Case Study: Strategic Foreign Policy Management After The Kenya-Somalia Maritime Dispute Ruling
Context and Challenge:
In October 2021, after an unfavourable ruling by the International Court of Justice regarding the territorial maritime dispute with Somalia, Kenya faced significant diplomatic and regional security challenges. Positioned as the foreign policy lead, my task was to mitigate tensions and reframe Kenya’s international image, which had been tarnished by perceptions of Kenya as a meddlesome neighbour and its military actions as foreign occupation in Somalia.
Action Taken:
I led a team of eight to reassess prevailing media narratives affecting diplomatic ties. Through a comprehensive stakeholder analysis identifying key domestic, regional, and international groups, we restructured Kenya's foreign policy communications to support cooperative relations with Somalia. Partnering with a leading communication agency, we produced a three-part documentary series with insights from 17 diverse experts, aimed at reshaping local and international perspectives.
Results:
The repositioned media strategy significantly altered perceptions, reducing antagonism and enhancing Kenya’s diplomatic stance. The documentary and associated media engagements led to a refreshed phase in Kenya-Somalia relations, with the grand strategy paving the way for ongoing positive engagement.
Key Learnings:
The initiative highlighted the crucial role of accurate stakeholder analysis and targeted communication in international relations. Effective management of foreign policy crises requires not only a thorough understanding of the geopolitical landscape but also strategic media engagement to influence both regional and global perceptions.
Conclusion:
This project underscored my ability to navigate complex geopolitical issues and manage sensitive international relations under pressure. My leadership in developing and executing a comprehensive strategy demonstrates my capability to handle high-stakes foreign policy issues, making me a valuable asset for any organization looking to enhance its international diplomatic effectiveness.

Case Study: Australia Day Celebration Coordination at the Australian High Commission
Context and Challenge:
In my role as the Regional Political and Economic Manager at the Australian High Commission in Nairobi, I was entrusted with the significant responsibility of organizing the Australia Day celebration in April 2022. Australia Day is the most prominent event on the High Commission's calendar, attracting over 300 attendees, including East Africans, Australian citizens, alumni, diplomats, and government officials. The challenge was to create an authentic Australian experience in Nairobi, ensuring high-level engagement and brand visibility while managing the logistical complexities of such a large-scale event.
Action Taken:
In preparation for Australia Day, I collaborated with the High Commissioner to strategically select a secure offsite venue and rigorously vet vendors, ensuring the capability to handle the event's scale. I oversaw the sourcing of Australian-themed décor and coordinated closely with our Canberra team to secure essential public diplomacy materials. Additionally, I played a pivotal role in drafting comprehensive vendor contracts, which proved essential when enforcing a crucial contract clause to manage a third-party contractor's late delivery, effectively mitigating potential losses and legal liabilities for the High Commission. This proactive contract management safeguarded the event's success.
Results:
Despite the challenges, the Australia Day event was celebrated as the most engaging and vibrant in the last decade, as echoed by the attendees' feedback. The event not only showcased Australian culture through its wines, foods, and thematic decorations but also significantly enhanced the Australian brand's visibility among a diverse and influential audience.
Key Learnings:
This experience underscored the importance of thorough vendor vetting, proactive contract management, and the ability to adapt swiftly to unforeseen challenges. The successful coordination of Australia Day highlighted my skills in project management, stakeholder engagement, and crisis resolution, which are critical in managing high-stakes diplomatic events.

Case Study: Strategic Policy Advisory for Enhancing Kenya-Tanzania Trade Relations
Context and Challenge:
In March 2021, following the passing of Tanzanian President John Magufuli, a critical opportunity arose to reset the strained diplomatic and trade relations between Kenya and Tanzania. At this juncture, Kenyan exports to Tanzania had decreased by 31% from 2015 levels, impacted by business rivalries, leadership differences, and divergent trade policies. In my role as the Foreign Policy Advisor at the Global Centre for Policy and Strategy, the challenge was to develop a strategic approach that would not only mend fences but also strengthen trade and investment ties under the new Tanzanian presidency.
Action Taken:
I spearheaded a series of in-depth stakeholder engagements, involving key academics, government officials from ministries of trade, revenue authorities, think tanks, and trade experts from both Kenya and Tanzania. This research aimed to uncover the nuanced politico-economic dynamics affecting bilateral relations. The advisory developed proposed strategic alignments between President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya and President Samia Suluhu of Tanzania, focusing on mutual interests and navigating the complex political landscape of Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi.
Results:
The policy recommendations were successfully implemented by the Office of the President of Kenya. A significant diplomatic engagement was facilitated, resulting in President Kenyatta inviting President Suluhu for a state visit. This meeting led to agreements on reducing trade tariffs and barriers, which had escalated in the previous five years, thus rejuvenating business interests and promoting Tanzanian investments into Kenya.
Conclusion:
This initiative effectively bridged the diplomatic gap between Kenya and Tanzania, showcasing the power of strategic diplomacy in resolving international trade disputes. The project highlights my expertise in formulating and implementing high-impact international policies.

Case Study: Strategic Coordination of High-Stakes Bilateral Visit
Context and Challenge:
In April 2023, I was entrusted by the High Commissioner to organize the bilateral visit of Australia's Gender Ambassador, Stephanie Copus Campbell AM, to Kenya, amidst a politically volatile environment marked by demonstrations. This mission was pivotal as it not only represented Australia's commitment to gender equality but also its diplomatic relations with Africa. The challenge was intensified by security concerns, given the ambassador’s schedule included visits to high-risk areas in Nairobi.
Action Taken:
To ensure a successful visit, I initiated a comprehensive approach by first aligning with the ambassador’s team to understand the strategic interests and core objectives of the visit. We crafted a meticulous program that incorporated meetings with influential government figures and visits to key Australian-funded projects, highlighting our commitment to local empowerment. To address the significant security risks, I spearheaded a detailed security assessment, adapting our logistics to the delicate social fabric and security advisories of the slums. Internally, I synchronized efforts across protocol, security, and public diplomacy teams, ensuring every aspect of the visit was seamlessly orchestrated. Externally, I engaged with local and diplomatic security forces and ministries, enhancing cooperation and ensuring robust support for the ambassador’s agenda.
Results:
The visit culminated in a comprehensive report by the ambassador, which underscored the vulnerabilities faced by women and girls in Africa and outlined actionable insights for Australia’s aid strategy. This report was instrumental in influencing Australia's legislative and funding approach to global gender issues, leading to an increased allocation for women-centered projects. It also sparked significant parliamentary debates, reinforcing the importance of international cooperation in gender advocacy.
Key Learnings:
This experience reinforced the critical importance of meticulous planning and proactive stakeholder engagement in managing high-stakes international visits. It also highlighted the necessity of adapting security and logistical plans to local conditions, particularly in politically sensitive environments, to ensure the safety and success of diplomatic missions. Furthermore, the project demonstrated the power of detailed reporting and communication in shaping national policy and international aid strategies.
Conclusion:
This experience underlined my capability to manage complex international events under challenging conditions, showcasing my expertise in strategic planning, stakeholder management, and policy impact. This case study not only reflects my commitment to advancing gender equality but also demonstrates my proficiency in navigating high-stakes environments, making me an ideal candidate for roles requiring acute diplomatic acumen and a robust strategic approach in remote settings.
